JHS The Fumble

The Fumble is a JFET boost based on the Dumble BBC-1 circuit also used in the clean section of NOTADÜMBLË V1. Use it to enhance a clean sound or push an overdrive or amplifier harder.

A clean boost with an unusual Input control

The Fumble reproduces JHS's version of the Dumble BBC-1, a JFET preamp circuit with roots in an earlier Barcus Berry design. That circuit also became the clean section of the first NOTADÜMBLË pedal; here it is available as a separate, fully assembled pedal.

Output is the master volume. Input is not a conventional gain control: turning it down reduces both bass and input gain. Fully clockwise applies no such attenuation. Choose between a fuller push and a tighter, more treble-forward attack before the signal reaches the next stage.

Four ways to use it

Place Fumble first in the chain to shape a clean foundation, before an overdrive to change how it is driven, or before an already overdriven amplifier for more intensity. After your drive pedals it can provide a lead-volume lift, provided the following stage has enough headroom.

The circuit is primarily a clean boost and preamp. The larger increase in drive comes from its output pushing another pedal or amplifier into breakup, rather than a separate high-gain channel inside Fumble.
