Throughout the decades, Electro-Harmonix pedals have been used by pedal heads and true musical innovators alike – and few fit that description better than Adrian Belew.
Following his career-launching work with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, and during collaborations with artists including Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, Belew discovered the extraordinary tone-bending possibilities of the original EHX Echoflanger.
This bucket-brigade-based time and pitch modulation pedal could create everything from lush chorus and classic flanging to completely warped, wiggly and unconventional sounds. With the Echoflanger, Belew developed signature sounds including the steel drum guitar on Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love”, the famous elephant sound from King Crimson’s “Elephant Talk”, and the rhino heard on his solo track “The Lone Rhinoceros.”
The Echoflanger would later appear under names including Polyflange and Polychorus, but the original remained a staple of Belew’s rig for years.
A Legendary Modulation Machine Reborn
The Adrian Belew Echoflanger Reissue is a limited-edition tribute to his vintage EHX Echoflanger, retaining the wild character and extreme modulation possibilities of the original while adding modern construction and a few new tricks.
Equal parts smooth operator and agent of chaos, it can deliver classic chorus and flanger sounds or push far beyond traditional modulation into completely twisted sonic territory.
Six Modulation Modes

FILTER MATRIX: A flanger effect with the LFO disengaged, creating a fixed comb filter for chime-like effects and manual flanging.

FLANGE: A sweeping comb filter capable of everything from classic whooshing modulation to more extreme effects.

CHORUS + FLANGE: Inspired by Adrian Belew’s custom “in-between” setting, discovered by parking the Mode control between Flange and Chorus on his vintage Echoflanger. It combines the sweeping filter of the Flange with the thickening echo of the Chorus.

CHORUS: A sweeping modulated echo producing lush, shimmering chime and rotary-style effects.

SLAP BACK: The short delay of the Chorus mode with modulation disengaged for a quick echo effect.

SLAP BACK + FILT. MATRIX: Combines the fixed comb filtering of Filter Matrix with the short-delay echo of Slap Back.
Controls

FEEDBACK: Controls how much processed signal is fed back into the input, ranging from mild modulation to self-oscillating mayhem.

RATE: Sets the modulation speed.

WIDTH: Adjusts the total modulation range.

TUNE: Sets the center point of the modulation for more undulating or shimmering effects.

MODE: Selects between the six operating modes.

VOLUME: Controls the overall output level.
Blend Switch & Stereo Operation
A rear-mounted BLEND switch allows the dry input signal to be removed from the output. With Blend ON, the pedal delivers traditional chorus, flange and echo effects. Switch it OFF and only the effected signal reaches the output, opening up more intense vibrato-style sounds.
The Echoflanger also features stereo outputs for expansive stereo effects and True Bypass with mechanical relays.
