The small battery-powered device replaces the plectrum in the right hand. An energy field under the device causes the string that you hold it over to swing and you thus have a touch that fades up and sustains as long as you hold the E-bow over the string. In this way, you can get a very expressive and different sound that is completely impossible to achieve with a plectrum or your fingers.

The E-bow lets you play as fast as your left hand can follow down the frets (or right if you are left-handed). You can fade in the string oscillations or you can run it up and down the strings for fat arpeggios. Add distortion and you get a screaming and awesome guitar sound.
