BJF Model R 5K

The BJFE Model R (MR) was originally released as a limited edition of only 99 units. The first 40 pedals were introduced at the Chicago ToneFest in 2006, where the model quickly gained attention among players looking for a highly dynamic distortion pedal.

The Model R was originally conceived as a cross between the Emerald Green Distortion Machine (EGDM) and the Little Green Wonder (LGW). In many ways it can be seen as a distortion version of the Dynamic Orange Overdrive (ODDO), a custom LGW variant with a modified circuit.

The design also played an important role in the development of the Mad Professor Sunset Overdrive / Sunset Wonder. Later experiments with the Model R concept eventually led to the Mad Professor MRD. While the MRD and MR share related tones and ideas, they are not identical circuits. The MR proved to be extremely sensitive and responsive, which made it difficult to standardize for large-scale production. As a result, the MRD was given a modified EQ to make it more stable with a wide range of amplifiers and speakers.

Compared to the MRD, the Model R has a slightly lighter distortion character and a broader dynamic range, allowing it to cover everything from powerful overdrive to full distortion depending on how it is set.

The Model R 5K expands the original design with an additional control, giving players even more detailed tonal shaping.

Controls

• D (Distortion) – Controls the intensity of the distortion.
• P (Presence) – Adjusts the high and upper treble frequencies. It can also be used to balance the tone when switching the effect on or off.
• R (Resonance) – Fine-tunes the character and spread of the distortion. Works similarly to the Presence control but allows more precise tonal shaping.
• E (Edge) – Controls presence and high treble, shaping the edge and bite of the distortion.
• V (Volume) – Sets the overall output level.

Power

• 9V battery (6F22)
• Standard 2.1 mm center-negative DC 9V adapter

If the supply voltage drops too low, the tone may become muffled and the LED will dim. In that case, replace the battery or check the connected power supply.

The BJFE Model R 5K remains one of the more unique BJFE designs—a dynamic distortion capable of moving smoothly between overdrive and distortion while offering deep tonal control.
