Square Wave Germanium Fuzzrite
Proper ’60s Fuzzrite snarl, built around two hand-selected NOS germanium transistors – with enough extra control to make it far more usable than the originals.
If you’re after that razor-edged, splatty and gloriously rude vintage fuzz rather than another smooth Fuzz Face variation, this is the one. Based on the germanium Fuzzrite circuits of the 1960s, Square Wave takes that unmistakable garage-fuzz character and expands it with three clipping voices, excellent cleanup and a surprisingly low noise floor.
At its heart are two NOS Sanyo 2SB185 high-gain germanium transistors, individually measured, matched and tested for noise. These are increasingly hard-to-find vintage components and a major part of what gives this pedal its distinctive response and texture.
Three Flavours of Fuzzrite
The three-way toggle changes the impedance of the clipping stage, altering how the pedal’s two fuzz stages interact.
With the switch pointing left, you get the closest homage to a classic 1960s germanium Fuzzrite – sharp, raw and cutting. The alternative positions bring more body and aggression, while the middle position is particularly nasty, adding extra low end for a bigger and seriously rude fuzz sound.
From Full-On Fuzz to Shimmering Cleanup
The small PRE-GAIN control acts much like rolling back your guitar’s volume knob. Back it off and the circuit cleans up remarkably well, revealing shimmering highs, gritty drive and lighter fuzz textures. Turn it up and you’re straight back into full vintage-germanium destruction.
