The Klon. There might not be a more easily-recognizable, more debated-about effect on the planet. And since they are rare and pricy, there are a LOT of copycats out there, but how to choose the right one? Well, the quest for the perfect clone may have just ended – welcome in the Centura Professional Overdrive from Ceriatone Amplification. Aesthetics aside, this beast sounds spot on to its original counterpart, made with high-quality parts and boldly displaying all the tone you could want from a mythical pedal. Let’s dive right in and check it out!
Right away, you’ll notice the parameters perfectly match those on the Centura’s more expensive counterpart. Gain dials in the amount of grit and dirt you need in your signal, Treble adds in higher frequencies as it is increased and Output sets the overall volume the pedal disperses. The true magic here is the tone….it’s almost something you can’t quite put your finger on, but instantly realize it’s been missing from your setup forever.
The Centura is amazing as a clean boost, the way many use the Klon, to beef up your pickups a tad, or to boost a signal slowed by a long effects chain. We found the sweetest spots to be between 10:00 and 2:00 on the Treble dial, with Output and Gain mixed in to taste, but everyone’s perception and use of this beast is going to be different (as with most pedals). As always, we use our trusty Benson Monarch for the demo below, and the Centura really made it come alive as a boost, and get down and dirty without being overbearing as an overdrive pedal.
All in all, the Centura Professional Overdrive is just that: a professional-sounding, high-quality built effects pedal that takes on one of the most popular of all time, and potentially tops it. Nik and the Ceriatone Amplification folks know about amps, and as is evident today, know a thing or two about effects pedals as well. The current wait list is about 6 months for one of these, so if you come across one and have the means, we highly recommend picking one up.
