Cultivated 68' Plexi tone by Kool & Elfring
THESE GO TO 11 MARCH 9th 2015:
"We received a phone call a week ago.
From an amp manufacturer called Kool & Elfring of whom we had never heard.
We spoke about tone and references and I got kind of interested in hearing their amps. They offered to ship us an amp without paying for it and if we didn't like it we could ship it back. But it gets better. If we didn't sell it within 6 months we'd could also ship it back. That's how you do business if you're really sure about your product. Meet the Straight 8, Cultivated 68' Plexi tone by Kool & Elfring. We're impressed.
If you're passionate about Marshall tones come in and try it, we believe you'll be impressed too. At a price point that's unusual for boutique amps."
We have always been a big fan of the 68? Plexi amps and it?s phenomenal three dimensional rich and open sounds. It took us almost 2 years of intensive research to discover the secrets behind the magical tones of this legendary amp. Thanks to some dear friends in the music industry we could compare our versions (and there where many!!!) with some awesome original JMP?s.
Beside the original plexi tones the Straight8 offers a second, hotrodded channel: the ultimate 80?s style brown sounding Plexi overdrive. Think Vandenberg, Slash on AFD, Randy Rhoads and early 80's VH.
Like all K&E amps the Straight8 is very is easy to use due to it's convenient single-row-chicken head-knob control panel. It takes just one glance to check your settings and you're ready to burn. Everything fits in a sexy, road-ready, convenient 50x25x25cm head. Furthermore it has some modern features and inovations like a foot-switchable ?true bypass? effects loop and double SVC ''Seamless Volume Control'' system that lets you to play at high and low wattage and boost your solo?s.
To us the Straight8 is a dream come true. It is the ultimate classic rock tool and an oasis of inspiration for new music. We left no stone unturned when designing and building this rock machine, now it?s up to you to write new history with it...
Ch1-mode 1: 'Clean'
The gain setting starts at splendidly sparkling and dynamically clean. Beyond one o?clock the clean morphs into a clean sound with sweetly organic edge of breakup. Around three o?clockvery gradually the sound changes into a sweet and subtle 3d-crunch. The sounds of ch1-Tweed-mode are best described as dynamic, three-dimensional, open and sparkling. It?s warm yet with good definition. This mode reacts perfectly to fuzz and boost pedals plugged into the front.
Ch1-mode 2: 'Crunch'
When you pull the 'push-pull-gain-pot' of channel 1, several parameters in the circuit are being altered dramatically, changing channel 1 into a super flexible, crunchy circuit. The overall sound of this mode is three-dimensional and open sounding with super tight bass response and very pronounced mids. When the gain-pot is turned up, it is easy to ?clean up? with the volume-control-pot on your guitar.
Channel 2 'Overdrive'
The 'overdrive channel? begins where channel 1 (clean voicing) stops but with more compression. Before nine o?clock you?ll find some incredibly cool crunchy 60?s sounds. Turning up the gain knob a little further the sound will effortlessly change into an amazing compressed 80?s style crunch. When you turn beyond two o?clock you?ll be entering ?overdrive territory?. The overdrive sounds are harmonically rich full and fat, yet tasteful, organical and musical. The sound of channel 2 is characterized by natural compression, super tight bass (no mud!), even harmonics and unparalleled sustain. Whatever gain setting you'll choose, it will always give a killer sound that cuts through the mix with ease. Channel 2 responds excellent to the volume-pot of your guitar.
SVC Volume Boost
The foot-switchable SVC Volume Boost enables you to soloboost channel 1 and channel 2 with adjustable volume control. In fact the SVC Volume Boost is an extra SVC Volume knob, with the exact same function as the original SVC volume knob. Turn this boost knob a little further than the SVC knob, engage the boost-button on your footswitch and your solo's will be boosted unlike you've ever experienced. It's like having a crew member turnig up your SVC volume whenever you start soloing, absolute guitarplayer luxury!
True bypass effects loop (foot-switchable)
The effects loop is buffered by 12AU7 tube. Adding the 12AU7, for several reasons, is not the cheapest solution but the 12AU7 does this job best as it affects the original signal least. The effects loop?s volume knob enables you to amplify, attenuate or balance the signal. Last but not least: You can true-bypass the effects loop with the footswitch! Tech talk: True bypass is achieved by a double relay switch at the front- and back of the loop. When the loop is being bypassed the loop physically disappears from the signal path.
SVC -Seamless Volume Control- (Tube amp volume under control !)
As both channels have individual gain and master volume controls, it?s easy to find your sweet spot on each channel. In the power section you?ll find an extra ?total? volume control which enables you to balance both channels volume levels, perfect for playing 'live'. But there is another amazing and unique feature called SVC (Seamless Volume Control). The power section ?total? volume control is capable of producing 0,1 Watt bedroom levels yet retaining great tone. So from now on the power-soak is a thing of the past!
